Sam Austin, Alassana Jatta and Aaron Nemane were on target as we played out a dramatic Easter Monday draw with MK Dons.
Austin converted from close range in the dying embers of the first half to cancel out Max Dean's stunning 18th-minute opener.
Jatta then put us in front with an excellent header in front of the Kop, only for Ellis Harrison to score two off the bench to put his side back in front.
But, in the first of six added minutes, Nemane converted Jodi Jones' low cross to earn us a more-than-deserved point.
Stuart Maynard made four changes to the side that slipped to defeat at Swindon.
The first came in goal, where Sam Slocombe made way for Luca Ashby-Hammond.
He was protected by the same back three of Kyle Cameron, Aden Baldwin and Lewis Macari, with Scott Robertson shielding them in defensive midfield.
There was a change down the left as Jones dropped to the bench following the recent arrival of his baby, with Adam Chicksen replacing him on the opposite flank to Nemane.
Further forward, Austin returned from illness to partner Dan Crowley behind front pair Macaulay Langstaff and Jatta.
That meant John Bostock and David McGoldrick were on the bench alongside Cedwyn Scott, who was named in a squad for the first time since sustaining a knee injury in August.
We made a bright, energetic start to the match and could have been ahead on nine minutes as Chicksen delivered a superb cross from the left, which Jatta could only head over the bar.
Our early dominance continued but we were hit with a sucker punch on 19 minutes as Dean produced a stunning turn-and-finish from 20 yards, finding Ashby-Hammond’s top corner.
Langstaff led the charge for an equaliser, cutting in from the left and crashing a superb strike off the bar before, seconds later, seeing Chicksen denied a tap-in by a heroic clearance following Nemane’s low cross.
Crowley was next to try his luck, brilliantly beating his man before lobbing his effort over, with Langstaff seeing an effort deflected behind as we continued our pursuit of an equaliser.
And we were rewarded deep inside first-half stoppage time as Nemane spotted Crowley’s run into the area and watched on as the midfielder’s powerful low cross was turned goalwards by Jatta. Filip Marschall blocked the Gambian’s effort but the rebound came to Austin for the close-range finish.
We carried our momentum into the second half and, within three minutes, put ourselves ahead in superb style as Chicksen’s barnstorming run down the left resulted in another perfect cross for Jatta who this time made no mistake with his header, majestically finding the net from the penalty spot.
Sensing the opportunity to put the game beyond our visitors, Langstaff cut in from the left and whistled a shot a yard wide of the near post.
And, shortly after Bostock had replaced Austin in our first change of the day, we went close again as Nemane controlled the ball 20 yards out before shooting narrowly over the bar.
The visitors began to mount their own pressure thereafter and it told on 64 minutes as Baldwin’s big block in the area resulted in Wearne laying the ball on to substitute Harrison to score from 10 yards.
And, after Chicksen had made Ashby-Hammond’s life easier by taking the sting out of an Alex Gilbey shot, we found ourselves behind as Harrison sprang the offside trap, ran through on goal and lobbed Ashby-Hammond.
The goal had come shortly after the introduction of McGoldrick and Jones for Jatta and Chicksen – and Jones’ arrival proved pivotal as, in the first of six added minutes, his low cross was turned home by Nemane a yard or two out.
We could have won it moments later as Crowley slipped Langstaff into the area with a clever free-kick but, after McGoldrick was unable to connect with the number-nine’s low cross, the referee called time on a pulsating bank holiday clash.
