Deadlock despite dominant display

2 December 2020

We were unable to make our dominance count as Dagenham and Redbridge held us to a goalless draw in East London.

We were well in control of the match, particularly in the first half, and saw Jake Reeves hit the post and a huge penalty appeal waved away.

Dagenham also hit the post from a free-kick but in the end neither side was able to break the deadlock and we had to settle for a point.

Neal Ardley made one change to the side that earned a dominant victory over Wealdstone, as the injured Richard Brindley made way for Adam Chicksen.

That meant another start for attacking midfield trio Elisha Sam, Ruben Rodrigues and Enzio Boldewijn, who all impressed against the Stones.

And, on a cold, damp East London evening, Sam claimed the first shot, curling the ball straight at Elliot Justham from 20 yards.

It was a sign of things to come in a first half which somehow ended goalless despite our dominance.

Rodrigues had two chances to score in quick succession on 11 minutes, first receiving a neat lay-off from Boldewijn and seeing his shot blocked by a sprawling defender before scuffing Dion Kelly-Evans low cross straight at the keeper from close range.

A minute later, Reeves rattled the woodwork with a sweet 20-yard strike following a well-worked short corner and we continued to assert our dominance when Kelly-Evans crossed for Kyle Wootton, who could only head the ball over under pressure.

On 20 minutes we had our heads in our hands again as Boldewijn did brilliantly down the right to cross for Sam, who forced a strong reflex save from Justham at his near post.

And shortly after that Rodrigues weaved his way to the edge of the area before firing the ball a yard or two wide of the near post.

Justham saved Reeves' 25-yard effort moments before Rodrigues released Sam into the left-hand channel, only for the Daggers defence to halt him on the byline as he progressed into the area. The ball fell for Rodrigues from the subsequent corner but, on the turn, he could only fire it off-target.

There were no changes at the break but we nearly altered the scoring within two minutes of the restart when Sam unlocked the Daggers’ defence with an outstanding through ball for Boldewijn to race on to. The Dutchman took the onrushing keeper out of the game with a lay-off for Wootton who was all set to tap the ball into an empty net before going down in the area. Despite huge protestations from our players, the ref said no foul.

We continued to dominate and nearly had a fortuitous opener just before the hour when Reeves dragged his shot across goal, causing the ball to cannon off Wootton and just wide of the opposite post.

Ardley made his first change on 67 minutes as Tom Walker, signed on a short-term loan from Harrogate as cover for the injured Cal Roberts, replaced Boldewijn.

And, shortly after former Magpie Scott Wilson had seen a shot blocked by Kelly-Evans, Jimmy Knowles replaced Rodrigues in a further change in the attacking third.

Our nerviest moment of the match followed as Will Wright struck the post with a free-kick, and our hearts were in our mouths again with 12 minutes to play when substitute Angelo Balanta saw a shot blocked by Connell Rawlinson before dragging the rebound wide.

Wootton then missed a good chance of our own, latching on to a bouncing ball in the area but failing to keep his shot down under pressure from a defender.

Jim O’Brien replaced Sam during the subsequent stoppage and he saw a shot deflected narrowly wide by a defender shortly before three minutes of added time were signalled.

But there was to be no breakthrough as the game ended goalless.
