Moniz: We Need More Leadership, Co-Operation And Communication

10 April 2015

Notts County Manager Ricardo Moniz has been impressed by what he has seen of his squad in the short time that he has spent with them since being appointed.

Moniz was confirmed as the new Notts County Manager on Tuesday and held his first training session with the squad on Wednesday before meeting the press on Thursday morning to preview this weekend’s key Sky Bet League 1 game away to Yeovil Town.

The Dutchman has placed the focus on making the squad play with a freedom and to the best of their individual abilities this weekend, whilst making tweaks in the way that they approach the game as a team.

“I must make them confident in their unique qualities, because a trainer can only train, a coach can only coach, they must do it, they must use their specific qualities and have the confidence to do that,” Moniz told the media on Thursday.

“In the philosophy, yes there must be a few changes, because in the philosophy you have to be capable of scoring chances, you have to score more goals, you need more leadership, you need more co-operation, more communication with each other,”

Moniz was also full of praise for the coaching team that he has inherited at Notts, adding: “It’s not me, it’s always we, first of all. It’s about unity, as I said, I have a fantastic staff, people who are very helpful.

“Dave [Kevan] for example, who gives me all the information because, to be honest, he knows more from League 1 than me, that’s the truth. So I must rely on others. You can only have success when you co-operate and work together.”

Talking specifically about this weekend’s game against Yeovil, Moniz is under no illusions as to how tough it will be, but is excited by the challenging, saying: “It’s their last chance to stay up, so they will fight for their lives, so it’s a special, special game.
