Gaffer Chuffed To Bits To Sign Number One Target

15 May 2014

Manager Shaun Derry was delighted to re-sign striker Jimmy Spencer on a two-year deal...

22-year-old striker Jimmy Spencer put pen-to-paper on Wednesday on a two-year deal at Meadow Lane and there was no one more happier at the club than the boss.

The former Huddersfield man was a key player in the success of the Great Escape as he scored five times in 13 appearances.

Derry told Magpie Player: "I'm absolutely chuffed to bits. Since the minute he walked into the club at the start of February, all the way to the end of the Oldham game he was fantastic.

"He gives us a great platform to play off and I'm hopeful that this is a sign for future signings coming in of that calibre. I feel I've got a top, top league one centre forward.

"We took a gamble on him, and he took a gamble on us. He got his head down and was a huge positive performer on the pitch and a cracking lad off it.

"I'm delighted because he's a top guy and a top character.

"I know Jimmy wants to play for the fans too, who have been brilliant since his arrival. I want to get a few signings early doors, but a big signing like this whets the appetite for us all.

"I'm hoping this club goes onto higher levels and see Jimmy performs and trains and I think he's got another level in him.

"He was my number one choice to get this summer and I'm thankful he put pen to paper."
