Derry Bemoans 'Schoolboy Defending'

12 March 2014

Notts County deserved to lose against MK Dons after such a poor defensive display, says manager Shaun Derry.

The Magpies gifted the Dons their first two goals in Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss at Meadow Lane.

Key decisions have cost County so many points this term and is a big reason why the team is bottom of the Sky Bet League 1 table - five points adrift of safety.

“It was absolute school boy defending all over the pitch and we gave goals away,” said Derry.

“You look at the decisions they (MK Dons) make in terms of how consistent they were and how inconsistent we are.

“That’s where we are where we are because to go from Saturday to this performance just baffles me.

"Nothing's changed in terms of where we are at the minute and where we were when we first came in.

"It's the same fundamental errors - every time we go on the pitch.

"One day we'll spring a surprise and play how we want to play - how I want them to play - and things go well.

"Then we just can't back the performances up and it's a major problem."

He added: “What this club needs is an injection of pride but sadly the only people who can inject that is the players at the moment.

“If you could rely on everyone else that works for Notts County they’re full of pride - self-pride - and that’s what really hurts me at the minute.

“We’re looking at the guys and saying ‘we’re relying on you’ and they need to surprise me on Saturday, because I’m questioning them - massively.”
