Sheehan: He Was 10 Yards Away!

24 July 2013

Striker Danny Haynes may have claimed the opener against Rayo Vallecano but left-back Alan Sheehan was having none of it.

Sheehan’s in-swinging free-kick from the right wing appeared to be guided into the bottom corner by the former Charlton Athletic frontman on his first Meadow Lane appearance.

The stadium announcer declared that the goal was Haynes’ but Sheehan begged to differ.

He told Magpie Player: “I’d like to give it to him but he was about five to 10 yards away from it and he was laughing when it was called out.

“It was good to get a goal against a good team.

“Last year I didn’t score but I got about 10 assists, though I’d like to get a lot more.

“I’ve started off well with pre-season and hopefully it can continue into the season.

“It doesn’t matter who scores and sets them up as long as we get the goals.”

Vallecano looked set to win Tuesday night’s match, following a quick-fire second half double from Adrian Gonzalez, but Yoann Arquin made it 2-2 late on with a stunning half volley.

“They were different class, like Galatasaray they’re going to have a large amount of possession,” Sheehan continued.

“We had to be organised and we were for large parts of the game.

“The first half we had a stronger team out and went in 1-0 up but we conceded a couple of soft goals.

“It’s all about learning now and we’re now looking forward to the game against Ipswich before Sheffield United and we’re not a million miles away.”
