Ilkeston 0-5 Notts

Trialist Tyson lights up the New Manor Ground

13 July 2019

Notts County ran out 5-0 winners at Ilkeston Town in their second pre-season friendly of the summer.

A superb first-half hat-trick from trialist Nathan Tyson was the highlight of the day as the former Magpie ran riot on a stuffy afternoon in Derbyshire.

Enzio Boldewijn and Kristian Dennis also contributed lovely finishes on what was another very productive pre-season outing for the Magpies.

Tyson wasn’t the only new name on the teamsheet as fellow trialists Remie Streete and Chris Camwell, both defenders, were available to Neal Ardley.

Ross Fitzsimons was between the sticks, shielded by a three-man defence of Streete, Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain and Pierce Bird.

Two more trialists, Dion Kelly-Evans and Kyel Reid, played as wing-backs with Mitch Rose and Michael Doyle in central midfield.

Tyson and Kristian Dennis led the line with Boldewijn playing in behind them.

Notts had the dream start when, on eight minutes, Tyson turned home Rose’s low right-wing cross from a couple of yards out.

And the ex-Derby and Forest man doubled his tally on 22 minutes, finishing superbly following good play by Bird and Boldewijn.

Tyson nearly had his third with a header that landed on top of the bar minutes before he closed down goalkeeper Brandon Ganley and nearly saw the rebound loop into the net.

The forward didn’t have to wait much longer for his hat-trick, though, as he adjusted his body superbly to guide Reid’s cross from the left beyond Ganley.

And, moments after Boldewijn had whistled a piledriver just over the bar, Tyson nearly had a fourth when he guided a first-time left-footed effort inches wide.

Ardley made two changes at the break as Camwell replaced Streete and Matt Tootle came on for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But it certainly didn’t disrupt the Magpies’ flow as Tyson spun away from his man in midfield before rolling the ball to Dennis, who produced an excellent finish in the area.

That was to be Dennis’ final action as he made way for Remaye Campbell, who curled an effort just wide shortly after his introduction.

A raft of further changes followed with Sam Osborne, Andy Kellett, Will Patching, Alex Howes, Declan Dunn, Tyreece Kennedy-Williams, Max Culverwell and Tom Crawford replacing Tyson, Kelly-Evans, Doyle, Boldewijn, Bird, Reid, Fitzsimons and Rose.

Notts continued to push for more goals, with Campbell going close on a number of occasions, Dunn whistling a long-range effort just wide and Osborne firing the ball narrowly over.

But there was to be no further gloss on the scoreline as the Magpies comfortably collected their second successive pre-season victory following last weekend’s 2-0 success at Nuneaton.
