Throwback Thursday: Notts County vs Tranmere Rovers - May 1990.

26 May 2016

It is nearly 26 years ago to the day that a stay of five seasons in the Third Division finally ended as Notts County beat Tranmere Rovers 2-0 at Wembley Stadium in the Playoff Final.

Tommy Johnson gave the Magpies the lead with his 20th goal of the season before defender Craig Short sealed victory.

Skipper Phil Turner was clearly overwhelmed by the occasion. He said, "I was so proud last week when I got Player Of The Year, but I just couldn't stop myself crying as I went up the steps. To receive that trophy and turning to face the fans was an absolutely marvellous moment and I couldn't have been any prouder."

The game was played out in front of over 29,000 fans, with Johnson and Short getting the goals for the Magpies.

Here's the team from that day:

1. Steve Cherry
2. Charlie Palmer
3. Nicky Platnauer
4. Craig Short
5. Dean Yates
6. Phil Robinson
7. Dean Thomas
8. Phil Turner
