Shaun Derry Praises Squad's Character After Dramatic Three Points

20 August 2014

Manager Shaun Derry was delighted with his new look squad after an eventful night at Meadow Lane, which saw two players sent off and a 2-1 victory over Colchester United...

Goals in each half from Ronan Murray and Liam Noble helped Notts claim their first three points of the season, but the Magpies had to do it the hard way finishing the match with nine men.

Derry was also sent to the stand in protest after the visitors equaliser, whilst 18-year debutant Cieron Keane and Nicky Wroe saw red after two bookings a piece.

Derry told Magpie Player: "Saturday's defeat hurt a lot and I wanted a reaction and we got one. We started fantastically well, then Colchester came back into it and gave us problems.

"But unlike against Fleetwood we dug deep and kept it tight until half-time, that then gave us a platform to come out in the second half.

"The lads showed everyone what they are all about, great characters.

"I'm really disappointed in myself, I let myself down and I will take full responsibility. But it's an emotional game and I just want people to be consistent.

"It was a roller coaster and I just wanted us to do well.

"I missed the second goal from Liam (Noble), but I've seen it on the replay, it was a top-draw goal. I'm really pleased for him. He can get goals from midfield.

"He had a Terry Butcher-style head band on and he wanted to play. All of the lads want to play for this game.

"Tonight it was all down to character. We found a way and we affected the game today."

The boss also revealed that midfielder Alan Smith and left-back Blair Adams could both be back from injury for the weekend's game against Port Vale.
