Academy manager Mick Leonard believes that Romello Nangle’s goal against Colchester United was a huge occasion for the club.
Nangle became the first player out of the Magpies’ youth set-up to hit the net since its reformation in 2008.
The second-year scholar is one of seven players from the Meadow Lane Academy to appear on the first team scene this season alone.
He is joined by Fabian Spiess, Haydn Hollis, Curtis Thompson, Greg Tempest, Liam Mitchell, Kyle Dixon, Jake Wholey, who have all featured in some form during 2012.13.
Leonard was overjoyed for Nangle when his low drive late into the 3-1 win over the U’s found the back of the net.
He believes that Nangle can have a bright future in the game if he applies himself correctly.
“For one of them to score the first goal is huge and well done to Romello, because he’s deserved his chance,” said Leonard.
“He’s been very lively in the youth team, he’s very quick and aggressive but just needs to work on his strength now.
“We’ve got to remember that he’s only just turned 18 and it was a great day."
He continued: “When he runs he’s electrically quick and for the goal he’s got in front of the forward and finished it off with a good side-footed finish.
“It’s tremendous pace that he possesses but he needs to bulk up a bit, eat his greens for dinner, get a breakfast down him in the morning and strengthen up, but who knows?
“It’s good for Romello and maybe he’ll be a part of the next two games, which will hopefully give him the confidence to become even better.”
