Garry Thompson: It Was An Important Goal

12 April 2015

Goalscorer Garry Thompson believes the equaliser was an important goal, as the Magpies levelled the game late on to earn a 1-1 draw with Yeovil Town on Saturday…

Thompson got the goal with ten minutes remaining, heading in from close range after an excellent cross from Jamal Campbell-Ryce, and the forward was quick to praise the Sheffield United loanee for his hard work to create the goal.

Thompson Magpie Player: “I think you can see from the reaction in the celebration how important it was. We plugged away today and we got in some outstanding positions and didn’t really capitalise on it.

“Jamal (Campbell-Ryce) has put a great ball in. I was in the right place at the right time and made contact with it, and it has gone in the back of the net.

“Ultimately we are still disappointed, we thought there was only one team that was going to win the game today and that was us.

“They hit us on the break a couple of times, but for all our possession and football and chances created, I think there was only one team that were going to win it.”

The Magpies’ top goalscorer continued to discuss his teammates’ hard work. Roy Carroll made an exceptional save in the first half to deny Gozie Ugwu from doubling the hosts’ lead, and Thompson says the Notts number one kept them in the game. On-loan duo Jordan Williams and Graham Burke received praise too for their performances.

He added: “You could expect that from Roy (Carroll) really, I don’t think it can go down as exceptional because we are just used to Roy doing it. He does it every day in training.

“He saved us again today, when you have a great keeper like Roy, he sets us up and he kept us in the game today. He has given us a hard earned point with his performance.

“I also thought Jordan Williams was superb when he went into the centre-half position. His athleticism, his strength and his calmness on the ball was superb, I think a special mention has to go to him and also Graham Burke when he came on as well. I thought he got on the ball and did exceptionally well for us. They are only young boys but I think they did exceptional for us today.”
