Best win of the season

22 October 2016

Notts County manager John Sheridan says today's win at Portsmouth was the best result of the season so far.

The Magpies beat Pompey 2-1 at Fratton Park, Adam Campbell with both goals.

And, after a tough first half, Sheridan was delighted to oversee yet another victory on the road.

The manager said: "From what I've seen so far, I think Portsmouth are the best team in the division. I knew it would be a very hard game and to come away with three points, after the disappointment of the last couple of games, is a massive bonus for us.

"My tactics were all wrong in the first half. I played Duffy just in front of the back four and it didn't work - there was too much pressure. I just felt we gave them too much respect.

"And then second half, I told the players to believe they could go and win the game. I thought we competed really well, we defended when we had to and we had good opportunities ourselves."

There was little to choose between Campbell and Notts keeper Adam Collin for the Man of the Match award, the latter making a number of excellent saves at various stages of the game.

Sheridan said: "Adam Collin has had an absolute stormer.

"He made some wonder-saves - whatever he had to do today, he was on top of his game - but it's a team effort. We didn't half defend well and I'm chuffed to bits for the players. We battled our socks off.

"We've got another tough game next week now (at home to Luton). We're all up and down - we can't believe our away form but we can't believe our home form either, so we've got to sort that out."
