Charlie McCann's second-half goal consigned us to defeat on the final day of the season.

The midfielder capitalised on a succession of mistakes inside our own area to secure his side the points.

We soon took control of the game and were cursing two strong defensive blocks in the opening 20 minutes, with Scott Robertson and Dan Crowley both seeing goalbound efforts halted in their tracks.

Jim O’Brien, making his 599^th career appearance, was then denied by a strong save at Vicente Reyes’ near post before Kyle Cameron nodded a Crowley cross into the side-netting.

The game entered a lull thereafter, with the hosts failing to create any real opportunities from a couple of rare attacks and Crowley sending two decent chances off-target before the referee called time on the half.

There were no changes at the break and the second half began with Jones firing over and O’Brien doing well to divert a Harvey Bunker effort wide.

We then had our hearts in our mouths as Luca Ashby-Hammond conceded possession to Jamie Robson, only for the Rovers man to send his shot well over his bar.

But more sloppy play was punished on 74 minutes as mistakes from Robertson and then Nemane led to McCann firing the ball into the roof of the net.

We’d already had a triple sub planned and it saw Sam Austin, Lewis Macari and O’Brien make way for Richard Brindley, Cedwyn Scott and David McGoldrick.

But the hosts could have gone two-up shortly afterwards as we had to rely on Cameron to make a good block from Fankaty Dabo’s shot.

We struggled to impart our own threat on the game thereafter and, shortly after Lucien Mahovo, making his league debut, and John Bostock were sent on for Cameron and Robertson late on, the referee called time on our 2023-24 season.
