Don Masson

Inducted 1 December 2014

Don Masson, a skilful midfield player, holds the unique record of having captained Notts to three promotions.

These landmark successes were achieved in 1971 (when the Magpies were champions of the Fourth Division); 1973 (from the Third Division); and 1981 (from the Second Division to the top flight of English football, then the First Division).

A year after the second of those memorable achievements Don was transferred to Queens Park Rangers, returning to Meadow Lane from Derby County in 1978 to complete his hat-trick of promotions.

It makes his transfer from Middlesbrough to Notts in 1968 all the more remarkable, considering the fee was only £7,500 and included another player, full back Bob Worthington.

In his two spells at Meadow Lane Don completed 442 appearances in the league, the FA Cup and the League Cup, scoring 96 goals.

He also holds the distinction of being the only Notts player to have been the outright winner of the Player of the Year award on three occasions.

He was recognised by his native Scotland with the award of 17 international caps.
