Hear from our new man

24 May 2024

Matty Platt believes the next two years will define him as a player – and that Notts is the best place for him.

The defender has turned down a new contract at Bradford City, along with offers from elsewhere, to sign a two-year deal at Meadow Lane.

And he has cited our vision for the future, along with our playing philosophy, as the key reason for choosing us.

Platt said: “Firstly, I’m really grateful to Bradford for the two years I had there – narrowly missing out on promotion in the first year and then the play-offs in the second. I wish them all the best for the future.

“This is an important time in my career. The next couple of years are probably going to define me as a player, so there were difficult decisions to be made about where I wanted to be next season.

“But in the end I based my decision on joining the club that I felt was most likely to go places in the long term.

“In my conversations with both Richard Montague and Stuart Maynard, they’ve been really clear and passionate about the club’s strategy – which obviously starts from the owners.

“I’m a big believer that success in football comes from a sticking to a plan over a long period - and I’ve been left in no doubt that Notts know what they need to get to the next level, and that they share my ambition to climb the leagues.

“It’s not just about what’s happening in football terms – I’ve seen the work that’s ongoing with the pitch and have just taken a look at the new fanzone that’s being developed. It feels like the club’s building towards something and as a player that’s huge – it’s something you want to be a part of.

“I’m also really excited to return to a style of play which has previously brought me success during my time at Barrow under Ian Evatt.

“We won the National League in a possession-based system which required me and my fellow defenders to play out from the back, so that’s definitely another big draw for me to come here.

“I’m a defender at heart – I want to protect our box, win headers and make tackles - but I definitely feel I have another side to my game that can benefit this team.

“While I only played 45 minutes against Notts last season – the second half of the game at Meadow Lane – I saw enough to be really positive about the club’s chances of success this season.

“There are obviously areas that we’ll need to work on, such as the number of goals conceded, but I’m more than OK with the inevitable pressure and expectation that comes with being someone brought in to help resolve that.

“On the flip side, seeing the number of goals the team scored and the quality of players in all areas of the squad is a massive positive and I now just can’t wait to move to Nottingham, come in for pre-season and get started.”
