Memory Club: First meeting

New initiative gets underway

25 March 2024

We were proud to host the inaugural meeting of the Notts County Memory Club on Friday 22 March.

The initiative, which encourages former players and officials to reconvene at Meadow Lane and reminisce over their days in black and white, takes inspiration from the likes of Rotherham United, whose well-established Memory Club was recently attended by our all-time leading goalscorer, Les Bradd, along with his ex-Notts and Rotherham team-mate, Dave Watson.

Having reported back to our chief executive, Joe Palmer, on his thoroughly enjoyable experience, Bradd was given the green light to launch our own Memory Club, which got off to a great start last month.

Les said: “It was a fantastic occasion. It was wonderful to see so many of my former team-mates with whom I share so many happy memories – the likes of Brian Stubbs, Don Masson, Mick Rose, Bob Worthington and Ray O’Brien.

“It was also brilliant to see more recent figures like Gary Lund, who enjoyed reminiscing about his goal down at the Meadow Lane end to beat Manchester City!

“Some of the attendees have brain health issues and, speaking to their partners, it was a big help to them to be able to come to Notts County and relive their time at the club. It’s a huge plus for everyone.

“All being well, this will become a monthly occurrence and we’d love to see the initiative grow, with more former players attending. They can email me at les.bradd@nottscountyfc.co.uk for further details.”

Palmer added: “You could see on the players’ faces what it meant to stand on the directors’ balcony and look out on to the pitch, with so many memories running through their minds.

“As well as our former players, it was amazing to welcome FA chair Debbie Hewitt, as well as Dawn Astle and Penny Watson who have both done brilliant work in driving awareness about brain health issues in football.”

Also in attendance were John Barnwell, Ian Richardson, Mick Sommers, Seamus ‘Jim’ McDonagh and Bobby Tait, along with the club’s former media man Terry Bowles, voluntary historians Mick Chappell and Michael Harrison and club chaplain Rev. Liam O’Boyle.
