Head coach previews Trophy tie

12 September 2023

Head coach Luke Williams is hoping members of tonight’s starting XI give him ‘a problem’ to deal with in the future.

The boss is looking forward to giving much-needed game time to several senior players when Wolves Under 21s arrive at Meadow Lane for the first match of our EFL Trophy group stage.

“This is a real opportunity for some of the players who haven’t had the minutes they would have liked to show me they’re ready to play for us in the league,” said Williams.

“I want them to give me a problem by putting in a brilliant performance because I’m experienced enough to know that the more good players you have in good form, the more likely you are to win more games.

“That’s one of the hardest things to craft –a really strong group who are all ready to play – and tonight will help move us towards that.”

One man who will unfortunately miss out is Ollie Tipton, who is ineligible to face his parent club.

Tipton made the bench at MK Dons on Saturday but, other than a substitute appearance in our Carabao Cup defeat to Lincoln City, is yet to feature this season.

“The only issue with Ollie is that he joined very late in pre-season,” explained Williams.

“As a coach, I’m very thorough in the way I prepare players for first-team action and Ollie’s gametime has suffered as a result.

“But he’s a really good guy who has helped us hugely with the start that we’ve had, which people may not understand.

“He’s shown a lot of quality in training and, to add to that, a brilliant attitude. That’s helped us and I’m really pleased he’s with us.”

Williams and his staff have been preparing as hard as ever for tonight’s fixture, our first in the competition since a 2-0 defeat away at Sunderland in 2018.

For some clubs, ensuring they meet the EFL’s strict team selection rules will be top priority – but Williams doesn’t foresee any issues in selecting a suitable side.

“We’re fortunate in a way because, not having a big squad, I don’t think the rules can be a realistic issue for us,” he said.

“We could dip into the youth programme but, given the quality of the opposition, I think that would be irresponsible.

“We’re taking tonight seriously but, at the same time, we have to consider that we’re coming off the back of an extremely demanding away match, we have less time to prepare for Salford due to it being played on Friday night and that we’ll be up against young, elite players who will be physically very capable.

“There’s no point sulking about it, but we have to be practical.”
