We exit the Trophy

7 November 2023

We exited the Bristol Street Motors Trophy following a 2-0 defeat to Lincoln City.

Jack Burroughs and Jack Vale scored either side of half-time to secure their side's passage to the knockout stages on a night where we dominated possession but were unable to create enough clear-cut chances.

Having returned to the side for our Emirates FA Cup victory over Crawley at the weekend, Aidan Stone kept his place between the sticks.

We lined up in a back four in front of him, with youngster Lucien Mahovo at left back, Kyle Cameron and Connell Rawlinson in the middle and Ollie Tipton down the right.

The deep-lying Jim O’Brien formed a midfield trio with the more advanced Sam Austin and Aaron Nemane, with Will Randall and Tobi Adebayo looking to supply Macaulay Langstaff from out wide.

New signing Dan Gosling was named on the bench, along with fit-again Richard Brindley and Junior Morias.

We didn’t make the start we wanted, though, as moments after making himself big to deny Jovon Makama one-on-one, Stone was picking the ball out of his net.

Rawlinson’s attempted pass to Austin had been anticipated by Burroughs, who strode into the area and beat the keeper with a low shot at his near post.

It could have been two on 16 minutes, Jack Vale firing a first-time effort over from just inside the area, but we grew into the game thereafter and dominated possession for the rest of the half.

While chances proved hard to come by, we did go close once before the interval as neat build-up play saw Austin’s curled cross turned goalwards by Nemane – only for Adam Jackson to clear the ball off the line.

We emerged for the second half unchanged and, within three minutes of the restart, saw a stooping Adebayo header go wide from O’Brien’s cross.

Gosling was given his debut just after the hour, coming on alongside Brindley as O’Brien and Cameron made way.

But there was nothing the midfielder could do to prevent us from conceding against the run of play five minutes later, Tipton being robbed of possession and Vale racing into the area to score.

Morias, Charlie Gill and Madou Cisse replaced Langstaff, Randall and Austin as the time ticked away.

And the final chance of the game went to the hosts deep in second-half stoppage time as Stone denied Burroughs his second goal with a good save low down.
