Owners reflect on successful season

18 May 2023

Words cannot describe how proud we are of what the club achieved at Wembley on Saturday.

Before we reflect on the day, however, we would like to offer our commiserations to Chesterfield and thank them for their gracious messages of congratulations. They played brilliantly and we have no doubt they’ll be a force to be reckoned with next season.

While the team certainly didn’t choose the ‘easy way’ in this play-off campaign, we were so impressed with the mental and physical fortitude they displayed both in the semi and final. Their will to win was evident and we’re so pleased that, in the end, they, along with Luke Williams and his staff, got what they deserved for such an amazing, record-breaking season.

To witness the players lift the trophy and to join them in their celebrations in front of our 22,500 supporters, who we wholeheartedly thank for battling the travel disruption, was a dream come true and has only made us more determined to bring future successes to the club.

It was incredibly emotional to see Jason Turner’s flag on display, along with his photo being held by the players on the pitch. We know this meant a lot to his parents, Jen and David, who were there with us and delighted with the outcome of the match.

As we begin preparations for our first season without Jason, we would like to announce that our boardroom will be renamed in his honour from the start of the 2023-24 campaign. Anyone who experienced Jason’s warm hospitality over the course of his tenure will understand what a welcoming and engaging presence he was and we hope this gesture serves as further evidence to his family that he will never, ever be forgotten.

Throughout the season we have been hugely encouraged by the club’s progress off the field, with attendances at their highest in recent history. Saturday’s victory has only served to create an even bigger buzz around the club and our staff have been hard at work since full-time to ensure we capitalise on the opportunities presented by our success. We’d like to thank the incredibly hard-working behind-the-scenes team for their brilliant ongoing efforts.

Season ticket sales have already been very strong and, after selling around 4,000 last season, we expect our 2023-24 offering to receive the highest uptake of our tenure so far.

It was brilliant to see so many children and young adults at Wembley and, as ever, our season ticket pricing reflects our desire to attract people in those age groups to Meadow Lane.

We’re keen to engage younger fans in other ways, too, and look forward to announcing details of a significant campaign to engage 1,000 new families in the near future.

Renovations on the Meadow Lane playing surface are already underway and we’re pleased to confirm that work has begun on installing a new state-of-the-art PA system. The club has also acquired new equipment to maximise functionality of our scoreboards, so fans can expect a greatly-improved matchday experience next season.

Supporters will, of course, be keen to know details of which players will still be with us when the new campaign comes around. The club is going through the necessary processes as we speak and fans can expect an update before the end of the week.

When it comes to the recruitment of new players, fans are assured that we had been planning for life in League Two, as well as the National League, long before promotion was secured. We’re excited by the new opportunities our EFL status will bring and work has begun on building a squad which we hope will compete at the top end of the division.

Several key figures from this season’s squad are out of contract but, again, our fans should know that we are doing everything we can to maintain a strong nucleus of a side that has achieved so much.

Promotion doesn’t only strengthen our position in the transfer market – it consolidates other areas of the club, including our excellent academy which will benefit from a significant increase in funding. We’re excited to see how this positively impacts the development of the many talented young players within our ranks.

We hope our brilliant supporters continue to enjoy Saturday’s success and have a wonderful, relaxing summer!
