Report: Notts 0-1 Forest

Narrow defeat in pre-season run-out

15 July 2023

A goal from Hwang Ui-Jo early in the second half handed Nottingham Forest victory at Meadow Lane.

The substitute pounced on a mistake to produce a fine finish beyond Stone within seconds of the restart.

It was a rare error in an otherwise solid display with plenty of bright moments, particularly in the first half which began after a touching minute's silence in memory of those who died in the Nottingham attacks.

Jim O'Brien could well have had us ahead inside four minutes, lifting Aaron Nemane's low cross over the bar with a first-time shot.

Forest's response came from Belgium international Orel Mangala, whose low effort from 20 yards whistled wide of the post.

Another Nemane cross caused havoc shortly afterwards, Joe Worrall half-clearing the ball and watching on as Sam Austin fired over on the follow-up.

Brandon Aguilera sent an effort straight at Aidan Stone and drew a cynical foul from O'Brien, who was booked, before the half ended with Emmanuel Dennis heading the ball wide from a free-kick.

We found ourselves behind early in the second half, with Luke Williams taking the blame in his post-match interview for trying to pass on instructions to Kyle Cameron at the wrong moment. The defender was dispossessed in his own half, allowing Hwang to score.

The second period proved to be a much quieter affair, with us making a raft of changes on the hour mark, but there were nevertheless plenty of positives to take in front of a crowd of 16,163.

STARTING XI: Stone; Chicksen (Mahovo), Cameron (Claxton - T 60'), Rawlinson (Bajrami 60'), Adebayo-Rowling (Brindley 60'); Palmer (Bostock 46'), O'Brien (McGoldrick 60'), Austin (Crowley 60'); Jones (Munakandafa 60'), Nemane (Randall 46'); Scott (Langstaff 45')

UNUSED SUBS: Trialist (GK)
