Notts 2-3 Coalville

Visitors progress to first round

15 October 2022

A disjointed performance resulted in a 3-2 defeat against Coalville Town in the fourth qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The visitors twice took the lead in the first half, through Tom McGlinchy and Ash Chambers, only for Sam Austin to restore parity twice.

But Luke Shaw scored a scrappy winner, which on review appeared to be offisde, to send his side into Monday's first-round draw.

Luke Williams rotated his squad for this one, handing debuts to young defender Lucien Mahovo and on-loan Leicester goalkeeper Brad Young.

With Kyle Cameron absent from the squad, Connell Rawlinson took the captain’s armband and was flanked by Mahovo and Richard Brindley in a back three.

Joel Taylor returned from injury to slot in at left back, with Tobi Adebayo-Rowling on the opposite flank.

Geraldo Bajrami and Ed Francis played as holding midfielders with Quevin Castro and Austin ahead of them and Kairo Mitchell leading the line.

We had the nightmare start as, on three minutes, Brindley misplaced a defensive header which allowed the visitors to play McGlinchey into the area. The winger still had a lot to do but produced the perfect finish across Young and into the far corner.

It took only six minutes for us to restore parity as Austin trapped Adebayo-Rowling’s cross and rolled the ball home from six yards out.

Bajrami saw a long-range effort parried shortly before Brindley passed up a big chance, dragging his left-footed shot wide of the near post after being left unmarked in the box.

And we were left to rue that missed opportunity as, two minutes later, Chambers turned home a low cross from the right to put his side back in front.

Francis sent a low half-volley wide before McGlinchey was twice denied before the interval, Young palming his shot away before Mahovo made an important block.

We emerged for the second half unchanged but, with 53 minutes on the clock, Williams decided to send Ruben Rodrigues and Matt Palmer on for Castro and Mahovo.

Shortly afterwards, Taylor floated a cross into the area but Mitchell appeared to slightly mistime his jump and could only watch on as the ball glided just wide of the post with Town keeper Paul White scrambling.

We then had Brindley to thank as, after an Austin cross had just evaded Mitchell at the near post, the visitors worked a two-on-one counter-attack which the defender did brilliantly to snuff out.

And we were level again shortly afterwards when Taylor’s cross from deep sailed over White’s head and presented Austin with a free header into an unguarded net.

The attacking midfielder was then so close to a hat-trick as another header, this time courtesy of Adebyayo-Rowling’s cross, was well saved low down.

It was proving to be a busy period for Ravens keeper White, who flapped at a cross from the left and breathed a sign of relief as Adebayo-Rowling was unable to capitalise on the loose ball before Rodrigues sliced it over the bar.

Bajrami saw a long-range effort deflected behind and a defender made a crucial block to prevent Rodrigues scoring with a deft flick at the near post as we continued to press for the winner.

But we were hit with a sucker punch with four minutes to play as the visitors attacked our box from the left and saw a shot deflect off Shaw and into the net. Having reviewed the footage Shaw looked offside but the flag stayed down and Town celebrated.

We were given six additional minutes to force a replay and had a good chance to do just that when Rodrigues had a free header, only to send the ball straight at White.

And, after Rodrigues had glanced a tougher header wide, we bowed out of the competition.
