Palmer wins Player of the Season

Midfielder scoops fans' and players' awards

25 May 2022

Matt Palmer has been voted our Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season.

The midfielder joined us in the summer on a free transfer and quickly won over supporters with his consistently classy performances in our engine room.

And his contribution to the team has not been lost on his colleagues, either, who selected him as their standout performer.

In the 4,213 minutes he played in 2021-22, Palmer completed the most passes in the National League and also registered the most progressive passes in the division. He also topped our assists chart and made more interceptions than anyone else in the squad.

Our head coach Ian Burchnall said: “These awards come as just reward for the immense contribution Matt has made to the team this season.

“We knew what we were getting when we signed him – a true pro who has played a huge number of games at a high level, and has been respected everywhere he’s been.

“He sets incredibly high standards for himself day in, day out and that flows into consistent performances on the pitch.

“Beyond that, he’s a wonderful technician who is the perfect fit for our style of play. He’s been a brilliant signing and a huge asset to the club.”

Palmer added: "I want to say a massive thank you to the supporters and my team-mates for choosing me as their Player of the Season.

"So many of the boys deserve credit for their performances over the course of the campaign and it's a real honour to receive this recognition.

"I've loved every minute of my first season at the Lane - the style of play is so enjoyable and it's a great set of fans to play in front of.

"I and all the lads are gutted with the way things ended and will be taking the next few weeks to reflect before getting stuck into pre-season and setting our sights on promotion in 2022-23."
