Notts 2-1 Dagenham

Wootton wins it on freezing evening

27 November 2021

Kyle Wootton headed home a perfect Cal Roberts cross to secure us a big three points against Dagenham & Redbridge.

The centre forward guided the ball beyond the helpless Elliot Justham with 73 minutes on the clock, restoring our lead after Angelo Balanta had cancelled out Frank Vincent's header in the first half.

With new loan signing Connor Parsons slotting in at right wing back in the absence of Dion Kelly-Evans and Aaron Nemane, we made a bright start to the game with Ruben Rodrigues seeing a free-kick pushed away from the bottom corner by Justham.

Parsons and Vincent both fired efforts off target from outside the area before Matt Robinson whistled his own long-range shot wide.

A busy period was to follow for Sam Slocombe, who got down low to save from Mauro Vilhete before making two more comfortable blocks in quick succession shortly afterwards.

We thought we had seized control of the game five minutes later when Kyle Cameron met Matt Palmer's corner with a huge leap, presenting Vincent with the opportunity to flick his header into the net.

But Balanta had other ideas as, from a corner at the other end, he rose highest to head home the equaliser at the near post.

We emerged for the second half unchanged and Rodrigues had an excellent chance to restore our lead shortly after the restart, receiving an excellent cut-back from Richard Brindley but sending his first-time effort over from near the penalty spot.

And, 10 minutes later, the Portuguese missed an even better chance having done well to release Roberts into the area. The Geordie stood the ball up perfectly in the middle and Rodrigues opted to meet it with an ultimately misjudged diving header which sent the ball off-target with the goal at his mercy.

It wasn't to matter, though, as shortly afterwards another sublime Roberts cross was met this time by Wootton, who made no mistake with a towering header from six yards.

STARTING XI: Slocombe; Cameron, Lacey, Brindley; Taylor, Parsons (O'Brien 61'); Palmer, Roberts, Vincent (Francis 86'); Rodrigues (Mitchell 90'), Wootton

UNUSED SUBS: Rawlinson, Sam
