Rodrigues double earns dramatic 10-man win

4 May 2021

Ruben Rodrigues' penalty deep into second-half stoppage time handed us a huge win against Sutton United.

The Portuguese slotted home his second goal of the game from 12 yards despite Dion Kelly-Evans' earlier dismissal with the match poised at 2-2.

In the first half, Rodrigues produced an excellent finish to claim his second goal in as many games only for Isaac Olaofe to equalise with an audacious lob before the break.

We retook the lead when Kyle Wootton ended his lengthy run without a goal, tapping the ball home after Rodrigues had linked up brilliantly with Kelly-Evans.

But the dangerous Olaofe played a pivotal role in putting the visitors back on terms once again as he made progress down the left before seeing his low cross eventually come to Omar Bugiel to apply a close-range finish.

Our quest for three points became tougher shortly afterwards when Kelly-Evans received a second yellow card with 23 minutes to play.

But, after Sam Slocombe made an excellent save from the subsequent free-kick, it was us who looked more likely to score the next goal.

Elisha Sam, on for Jimmy Knowles at half-time, had a tight-looking offside decision go against him as he turned the ball home with 13 minutes to play.

Shortly afterwards, Mark Ellis had a chance to head home Jake Reeves' free-kick but could only nod the ball over under pressure from the visitors' defence.

Reeves then had an opportunity to put us ahead himself when Rodrigues did brilliantly to play the ball into the area, but there was a fraction too much pace on it and it ran through to the keeper.

It looked like the match was going to end in stalemate but we had other ideas as Ellis was felled in the box, leaving Rodrigues centre-stage to mark an outstanding individual performance with a memorable winning goal.

NOTTS STARTING XI: Slocombe; Chicksen, Ellis, Rawlinson; Miller (Brindley 72'), Kelly-Evans; Doyle, Reeves, Rodrigues (Turner 90'); Wootton, Knowles (Sam 46')

UNUSED SUBS: Griffiths, Boldewijn
