Weymouth 0-1 Notts

Sam wins the day in Dorset

30 January 2021

An individual second-half effort from Elisha Sam was enough to earn us the three points at Weymouth.

The big forward burst away down the left and dinked the ball into the far top corner to give us our second successive win and third consecutive clean sheet.

Neal Ardley made two changes to the side that beat Solihull in midweek, with Ruben Rodrigues and Sam replacing bench-bound duo Jim O’Brien and Inih Effiong.

We made a bright start to the game with Boldewijn sending a low shot a couple of yards wide before, 10 minutes later, he forced the Weymouth keeper into a strong save with a fierce strike from the edge of the ‘D’.

We were enjoying near-total dominance of the game but nearly got caught on the break on 29 minutes when Jordan Ngalo received the ball in the area but couldn’t find the finish to round off the counter-attack, sending his shot high and wide.

Dion Kelly-Evans, once again deployed at right back as Calvin Miller continued on the opposite flank, was displaying plenty of attacking intent and on 32 minutes scampered into the area before dinking a cross up for Wootton at the back post. The forward couldn’t generate enough power on his header to beat the keeper.

Shortly afterwards, Slocombe palmed another Ngalo effort to safety before Jake McCarthy volleyed the final opportunity of the half over the crossbar from inside our area.

There were no changes at the break but within five minutes of the restart we had altered the scoreline in our favour thanks to Sam.

The Belgian raced away from his opponents and, from the left-hand corner of Weymouth’s penalty area, dinked the ball over the keeper and into the top right-hand corner of the net to put us ahead.

Sam nearly made it two shortly afterwards, sending a powerful low effort just wide of the post from 25 yards, before Slocombe did brilliantly to preserve our advantage when he saved low down from McCarthy.

Boldewijn whistled a fierce strike just over from range before McCarthy’s wasteful afternoon continued as Slocombe again was equal to his shot inside the area.

Rodrigues could, and perhaps should, have put the game to bed two minutes later when Weymouth cheaply conceded possession deep in their own territory, gifting the Portuguese the opportunity to jink past his man to go one-on-one with Ethan Ross in the Terras’ net. Rodrigues saw his shot saved, however, and he soon made way for Jim O’Brien with Effiong also coming on for Sam.

As was to be expected, the hosts turned up their pressure on our goal as the game entered the latter stages but we stood firm to deny them any clear-cut chances and claim a narrow victory on the south coast.

Notts starting XI: Slocombe; Miller, Lacey, Rawlinson, Kelly-Evans; Doyle (c), Reeves; Sam (Effiong 74'), Rodrigues (O'Brien 74'), Boldewijn, Wootton

Unused subs: Turner, Wolfe, Knowles
