Jimmy joins on loan

Stags youngster adds to forward options

10 September 2020

We’ve bolstered our forward ranks with the loan signing of Mansfield Town’s Jimmy Knowles.

The promising 18-year-old will spend the 2020-21 season at Meadow Lane, providing competition for Kyle Wootton, Wes Thomas and Elisha Sam.

And the youngster is looking forward to showing what he can do in a black-and-white shirt.

"I wanted to have a season here where I could settle in and start playing regularly," said Knowles. "I think that will help me develop.

"The manager's made me feel welcome and I like the way he wants to play football.

"I've got a lot of energy - I'll press defences and force them into mistakes. I like to run in behind but I don't mind receiving the ball to feet and playing one-twos with the midfield and strikers.

"I've still got plenty of time to get to know the players and get used to the system the manager wants to play. By the time the season starts I think we'll all be ready as a team to push for promotion."

Neal Ardley added: "When we brought in Elisha, we looked at what we wanted from our fourth striker and knew we were looking for a younger one, be it a signing or a loan, who had a freshness and energy.

"Jimmy's quick, athletic and runs really hard. He's 18 so there are things he needs to work on but he'll complement Kyle, Elisha and Wes."

Knowles broke into the Stags’ first-team circles after notching four goals in a reserves match against Port Vale in March 2019 and went on to make eight senior appearances last season, scoring against Crewe in the EFL Trophy and Oldham in League Two.

He turned out for Mansfield in their Trophy tie against Manchester City earlier this week and is now set to compete for a starting berth at Meadow Lane.
