Reeves on target in big win

15 December 2020

Jake Reeves' composed first-half finish was enough to earn us a big win against promotion rivals Stockport County.

The midfielder swept the ball home on on 35 minutes following excellent attacking endeavovur from Richard Brindley.

And we were able to keep the door firmly shut at the other end to record an important victory which took us up to third in the Vanarama National League table.

Neal Ardley made one change to the side that was beaten by Boreham Wood last time out, with Ruben Rodrigues returning to the starting XI in place of Tom Walker.

The Portuguese lined up behind front man Kyle Wootton, with Jim O'Brien and Enzio Boldewijn flanking midfield pair Reeves and Michael Doyle.

After a lively start to the match which saw a dangerous Brindley cross snuffed out and Alex Reid's shot deflected wide at the other end, Reeves claimed our first effort of note with a 10th-minute long-range effort which whistled a yard or so wide of the post.

Wootton followed up with an effort of his own a minute later, fending off several defenders to get his shot away from the edge of the area but failing to generate enough power to beat Ben Hinchcliffe in the Stockport net.

The Hatters came close to opening the scoring on 23 minutes when the ball dropped kindly for John Rooney in the danger area only for Sam Slocombe to get down to his right and make a strong save.

Our response came from Rodrigues, who dropped deep to receive the ball in space before bursting into the penalty area and seeing his shot saved.

But there was nothing Hinchcliffe could do 10 minutes from half-time as we broke the deadlock with a well-worked goal.

It all started when Rodrigues played a teasing through ball into the area for the marauding Brindley to run on to. His opponent beat him to the ball but he didn't give up, winning it back in the penalty area. We then worked it to Wootton, who in turn laid it on a plate for Reeves to apply a composed finish and send us into the break ahead.

Stockport boss Jim Gannon, who had altered his side's shape in the first half, made two changes at the break in a bid to spark a recovery.

But he was up against a side unwilling to give their opponents an inch as clear-cut chances proved hard to come by in a closely-contested second half.

Hinchcliffe was off his line quickly to prevent Rodrigues from capitalising on Wootton's header into the area and the keeper was equal to another nodded effort from the front man shortly afterwards following O'Brien's cross from the left.

The closest our opponents came to levelling the score came on 74 minutes when Richard Bennett got to the near post and flicked a low cross goalwards. Ben Turner, who had produced a commanding display alongside Connell Rawlinson in central defence, got in the way and Slocombe gathered the ball.

Our one and only change of the night followed shortly afterwards as Walker replaced Rodrigues.

And the Harrogate loanee contributed to a tireless effort from the whole side to prevent Stockport from generating any momentum as we saw the rest of the match out in a thoroughly professional manner.
