Ivan Hampton

Former Notts defender dies at 76

5 September 2019

Notts County regret to announce the passing, age 76 of Ivan Hampton, a first-team regular in the Magpies’ defence during the 60s.

Born locally in Kimberley in October 1942, he signed amateur forms with Notts in 1960 and became a professional in March of the following year, making his debut at Chesterfield.

It was in 1962-63 that he really established himself in the first team with 29 league appearances, mostly at right back, plus three more in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup. Notts, playing at the third tier of the Football League, made a serious bid for promotion before finishing seventh in the final reckonings.

By contrast, the following campaign led to relegation to the fourth tier with Notts at the bottom of the table, having badly missed Tony Hateley who was sold to Aston Villa after his 22 goals the previous season.

Hampton’s most successful year was in 1965-66 when he missed only four league games and scored his only goal in senior football as Notts beat Colchester United 1-0 at Meadow Lane on 7 October.

After leaving Meadow Lane in the summer of 67 he signed for Halifax Town and later had a spell with Peterborough United.

His funeral service will be in the Serenity Chapel at Bramcote Crematorium next Thursday (12 September) at 2.45 pm and former players who remember Ivan are invited to attend if possible.

The club extends its sympathy to Ivan’s family and many friends.
