Pierce Bird made his competitive international debut on Tuesday night, coming on as a late substitute for Northern Ireland’s Under 21s.
The 19-year-old was brought on in the 78th minute of the European Championship qualifier away to Spain where his side upset the group leaders with a 2-1 win.
Northern Ireland went two goals ahead within eight minutes through Shayne Lavery and Liam Donnelly’s spot-kick and goalkeeper Conor Hazard saved a penalty inside the first half.
Former Notts player Ian Baraclough introduced Bird to help see the game out and his side continued to frustrate their hosts until stoppage time when Rafa Mir netted a late consolation.
The result moved Northern Ireland one point behind second-placed Slovakia in their qualifying group with two games to play.
The Notts defender started in the friendly with Luxembourg five days earlier and helped Baraclough’s side to a clean sheet, playing 70 minutes as they won by a goal to nil.
