Focus already on Coventry

21 June 2017

Kevin Nolan says his focus is already fully on the trip to Coventry City for the opening day of the 2017-18 EFL Sky Bet League Two season.

The Magpies begin their campaign at the Ricoh Arena and the manager insists the work done in pre-season will be done with one aim in mind: come away from the curtain-raiser with three points.

"I'm usually on the beach when I get the fixtures so it has been different this year!" he laughed. "I immediately looked at the first few games because they are the only ones I am worried about.

"The following fixtures are for us to concentrate on as and when they come around.

"We will have a plan for how to tackle each game which will be put into place very quickly but all of the focus will be on Coventry from day one of pre-season.

"We want to ensure we have a fully-fit squad going into it which will give us the best chance of starting with a positive result."

League Two was as unpredictable as ever in 2016-17 and the former Newcastle United midfielder expects the fourth tier to be similar again this time around.

"All of the fixtures are difficult; we are never going to get an easy game," he said.

"You saw last year that anyone can beat anyone and it will be the same again this season.

"We have to make sure we are well-prepared and get our targets in as soon as possible so they know what is expected of them and we are all singing from the same hymn sheet when we line up against Coventry."

Following the match against the Sky Blues, Notts have another away game to contend with as they travel to Scunthorpe United for the second successive year in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Iron were defeated in the Sky Bet League One play-off semi-finals last season but Nolan sees the game as a good opportunity for his team to show what they can do.

He said: "It is a difficult one but it will be a good test for our boys to see if they have the ability to match them. It is a game we will go and enjoy and hopefully give a good account of ourselves to get through to the next round."
