We more than matched them

22 July 2017

Notts County manager Kevin Nolan was keen to take the positives from Notts County's 2-1 loss in their pre-season friendly against Wigan Athletic.

The Magpies took a first-half lead through Lewis Alessandra but two goals after the break saw the Latics walk away victorious.

Despite defeat, however, Nolan was positive about his side's display.

He said: "Throughout the 90 minutes we more than matched them and made a lot of chances.

"But the manner in which we gave away the goals was frustrating and the lads know that.

"We are still two weeks away [from the start of the season] and there is a lot of work to do on the training pitch.

"We have to keep reminding the players of what we have to do to be successful but there were a lot of positives to take away from the game against a good Wigan side who got more than they probably deserved today."

Notts' goal was well-worked, Terry Hawkridge's cross being converted at the far post by fellow new signing Alessandra.

And the manager was pleased to see his side's attacking prowess come to the fore.

"We have got quality in the final third and I have told the players they have to believe in themselves more.

"They can all get better individually and collectively - and the signings we have brought in have taken us up another notch - but we will be a real handful once it all starts clicking into place."
