York defeat for 18s

12 December 2016

Notts County's Under 18s suffered a 1-0 defeat at York City.

The Magpies succumbed to a first-half strike from Ryan Edmondson and could not find a breakthrough to take their unbeaten run to three matches.

Notts took contol of the early proceedings with Remaye Campbell heading over with the first chance of the game.

But York hit County with a sucker-punch as Tyler Walton squared for Ryan Edmondson to slam in from 12 yards and give the Minstermen the lead.

Nathan Cobain denied the hosts a second, timing his tackle on Brad Freer perfectly to block the striker's goalbound effort.

Edmondson came close to doubling the lead and his tally for the match but he could only send a header sailing wide of the far post in the dying embers of the first half.

Notts could have had a penalty early in the second period when Tamar Clayton-Naute was taken down inside the area but the referee adjudged a York player to have won the ball, waving away the appeals for a spot kick.

The closest Dan Leivers' side would come to an equaliser was through Alex Howes, who cracked a shot against the crossbar before Joe Kemp cleared off the line for York to keep their lead intact.

County almost snatched a point close to the end when Campbell rounded York goalkeeper Alex Whitley but found Josh Rogerson in the right place at the right time to deny the striker an equalising goal.

Head of academy coaching Dan Leivers said: "It was disappointing to lose as it was an even game overall.

"They edged the first half but we felt we totally dominated the second and I think we should have had a penalty when Tamar was bundled over in the box.

"Sam Osborne nearly scored after poking the ball past the keeper and, after one of the best moves I've seen all season, Alex Howes hit the bar from just outside the area.

"We felt we'd do enough as the game went on but it was just one of those days when things didn't go right for us."

Notts starting 11: Searson-Smithard, Richards, McCartney, Dunn, Cobain, Dearle, Clayton-Naute, Howes, Campbell, Osborne, Gibbons

Subs: Hall, Towers, Ebanks, Robinson, Trialist
