High expectations

12 August 2016

Notts County manager John Sheridan says he expects victory from his team against Stevenage this weekend.

The Magpies kick off their home campaign against Darren Sarll’s side on Saturday (3pm).

And, encouraged by what he saw in the EFL Cup match at Scunthorpe in midweek, Sheridan knows exactly what he wants this time around.

He said: “It’s our first game at home and I expect us to win.

“If we show the same attitude as we did the other night (against Scunthorpe) and in the second half against Yeovil we’ve got a very good chance.

“We’re going to win games, we’re going to lose games – unfortunately it’s going to happen throughout the season – but we’ve got to get ourselves in a position where we’re competing at the top.

“I was really positive with Tuesday and with the second half against Yeovil. We’ve just got to take it into the next game."

While he is cautious not to make too many changes after declaring himself ‘quite pleased’ with his side’s first two performances, Sheridan says selecting Saturday’s starting 11 will be a ‘hard job’.

The manager expects Jonathan Forte to come back into contention, while club captain Michael O’Connor could be in line to make his debut should he come through a behind-closed-doors friendly unscathed.

Speaking about O’Connor, Sheridan said: “He’s a calming influence.

“One of his strengths is his ability to keep the ball. He keeps things ticking over and consistently he’ll give you a 7.5/10.

“We need him in the team – he’s the captain.”
