Club Saddened By Passing Of One Of The Longest Serving Staff Members

12 June 2015

The club were saddened to hear the passing of Mick Mayes who was part of the ground staff…

Mick had worked at Meadow Lane for over 30-years and was one of the longest serving staff members on the books starting in July 1984.

The hugely likeable staff member helped keep the stadium clean and tidy during the year.

Head Groundsman Trevor Hutchinson led the tributes by telling the Official Site: “Mick started in 1984, even before me, so that tells you how long he’s been working here.

“We had a brotherhood relationship with him and we’ve been through thick and thin together.

“He’s always been there when I’ve had bad times and it’s a devastating blow to us all.

“The ground staff this morning are gutted.

“Mick was so important to a club like Notts County, he was a character and I’d say the only job he hasn’t done was go in goal! When he started he was bar sales manager and he’s done various roles during his time here.

“There wasn’t a job he wouldn’t have a go at. He’ll be a massive loss. He was a genuine nice guy.”

Colleague Paul Shepherd added: “He was really great to work with and a cracking lad. He was a hard grafter.

“I’d do a lot of jobs with him, together, such as painting the tunnel, so this week has been very sad and we will all miss him.

“30-years is a long time to be in one environment. To lose someone who has been so close, it’s a big shock.”

The club would like to pass on their condolences to Mick’s friends and family during this difficult time.
