Halsall: Delighted To Get First Win Under Our Belts

22 September 2014

Notts Youth Team beat Hartlepool United 4-2 on Saturday to record their first league win of the season…

Goals from Colby Bishop (2), Elliot Brown and Lartey Sarpong gave Notts an important three points away at Hartlepool at the weekend.

The Magpies went behind early, but managed to respond quickly and score twice before the interval and continued to create more chances in an open game.

Striker Brown scored the equaliser, shooting through a crowded box, before his strike partner Bishop put Notts ahead after a neat turn.

Sarpong then combined with his team-mates in the second half to score from the edge of the box, before striker Bishop added a second to his tally with a shot from 20-yards.

Head of Academy Coaching Mick Halsall is now hoping his squad can use the performance to start a run.

He told the Official Site: "It was good to get the first win under our belts. It was a very open game and it could have easily finished 4-4, it was that open.

"It was great to respond so quickly to going a goal down and Hartlepool have been amongst the goals already this season, so we did well.

"Fingers crossed we can move on from here.

"We showed great focus in the training ground the week before and we were very focussed and we are getting more organised.

"On Friday the lads came to us and said they wanted to work on a few things and we've tightened a few things up, re-organised.

"We are all still learning and there's still improvements needed.

"It was pleasing to get the result and see the strikers get amongst the goals. That's a part we've been looking to improve.

"We scored some good goals, we had a little fortune for the first, but we are delighted to get that first win and hopefully help with our confidence."

The squad now have a free fortnight and face Lincoln City on October 11 at home next.

Halsall added: "We now have a couple of weeks to prepare. This weekend they will be in with our coaches and we are still looking to get a friendly on October 4, just to keep that fitness and match system.

"Defensively we still need to work on. We will look to address that in the next fortnight, as we've got a break.

"The break will give us time to get a few of the lads fit and back into the squad."
