Jones: We Knew It Was Going To Be Tough

Midfielder Gary Jones was full of praise for the way that Notts County dug in to grind out a result against Scunthorpe United on Saturday, paying particular mention to the calmness under pressure of match-winner Zeli Ismail.

The veteran midfielder told Magpie Player after the Sky Bet League 1 fixture: “Scunthorpe are bottom of the table and they’re the toughest games. We knew it was going to be tough, it was tough in the JPT, so we come here, we probably weren’t at our best today, but luckily we’ve got resolve in this team and character and spirit and we got a last minute penalty that Zeli put away.

“It was a great finish, there was a lot of pressure on him, last minute of the game, but cool as a cucumber he slotted it away nicely.

“I think their centre forward called him a few names, one that I can’t repeat, but as I say he’s got a cool head on his shoulders and he stuck it away nicely.”

Speaking of his own form, Jones added that he just wanted to keep performing to his best for the club, saying: “When you’re on this fantastic run, you want to play every game. I feel good, I feel fresh, I feel quite sharp to be honest with you, so as long as the Gaffer is picking me, I’m delighted to be playing.”
