Derry: I Just Knew It Would Be One Of Those Days

Notts County Manager Shaun Derry reflects on the 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United...

Notts County Manager Shaun Derry was delighted with the way his side battled to victory in a tough Sky Bet League 1 encounter with Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park on Saturday.

The Notts boss said after the game: “I just knew it would be one of those days today and I knew it might take something just a little bit special and that’s what it proved, a great ball by Stephen McLaughlin and we got the penalty, you know the two subs made an impact and I’m absolutely chuffed for the whole group.

“We asked the boys to stick in there and make sure that you’re always in the game, it might take 70, 80, 90 minutes, as it did, it took 90 minutes today and that little bit of quality was the difference between the two sides and I’m just fortunate that it happened to be on our side.”

Derry was particularly pleased to see his side keep a clean sheet after conceding five goals in their last two games going into Saturday’s match, adding: “If somebody was to say today, take another 5-3 win, I would have much rather had a 1-0, honestly I would, I’m really pleased that the back line have got their just desserts today, I thought, especially second half, we really deserved a clean sheet.”

And the Notts County Manager reserved special praise for the travelling support, who made up over a quarter of the total attendance within the ground, saying: “I know it was a scrappy game but I thought our fans were magnificent, absolutely magnificent. There’s nothing better than to turn to your right and see an away travelling support like that, I thought it was fantastic, really pleased for them.”
