Goalscorer Garry Thompson reflects on the 1-0 win at the Ricoh Arena...
Goalscorer Garry Thompson was quick to praise his team-mates after the 1-0 Sky Bet League 1 win away to Coventry City on Saturday.
Thompson scored the all-important goal in the 72nd minute at the Ricoh Arena, his sixth goal in five league games, but he wanted to keep the focus on the overall team performance in his post-match interview.
The 33-year-old told Magpie Player: “It’s nice to get the plaudits obviously, but the boys were phenomenal today, they stuffed out any real chances hey had.
“I was just trying to play on the shoulder of the defender and luckily the ball came my way and I was able to put it in the back of the net. It’s a great personal milestone to keep going and keep getting the goals but I can’t say enough about the boys who were behind me today.
“I didn’t get many stiffs today so to get that chance and to score was great and took the pressure off the boys at the back because, like I say, I thought everyone today was phenomenal, especially the back three.”
Thompson was also full of praise for how his side adapted to a new formation, which he revealed had only been settled upon by Manager Shaun Derry the day before the game, adding: “The Gaffer changed the formation yesterday in training and the boys slipped into it fantastically I thought and to change the formation yesterday shows the character and the heart of the boys to go out there and put it into practice.
“We’ve now got that formation in the locker, something we can go to if we need to and like I say I thought the lads were brilliant today.”
