Emotional scenes followed the final whistle at Boundary Park on Saturday afternoon, as Notts County completed the impossible.
The Magpies fought back to claim a point against Oldham Athletic, which completed what has been a truly remarkable ending to the season.
At one point, County had looked dead and buried but the draw ensured that the Magpies will be playing Sky Bet League 1 football next season.
“Ever since I came into the building, everybody has been right behind us and me and Greg [Abbott] can’t them enough,” said Derry.
“This place needs to have a foundation here first and we need to grow and we need to work harder and have an appreciation of what this club’s about.
“I will get people in that have that understanding of what I had and what I want the players to have.
“Look, I don’t want to take anything away from what we’ve achieved but I don’t want this again - it’s horrible.”
