McKenzie moved to Hillsborough in 2012 after a successful trial spell and went on to spend time on loan with Gainsborough Trinity as he continued his development.
The 19-year-old had previously had a spell at Norwich City and featured in the Owls Development Squad last season.
The young centre back, who is a commanding presence for one so young, has impressed manager Shaun Derry and will now join up with his new team mates when they return for pre-season training next month.
