Manager Shaun Derry was delighted to secure the signing of Alan Smith who has arrived as Player-Coach….
The former Leeds United and Manchester United player was released by MK Dons earlier this summer and the Magpies have moved quickly to secure his signature.
Derry believes that by ensuring the likes of Jimmy Spencer and Alan Smith have committed to their future with the Magpies, he can relax a little and now look at further players in the coming weeks.
He told Magpie Player: “It’s been a frantic start to the summer. By getting Jimmy and now Alan Smith into the club, they are two big signings. We were keen to get a couple over the line early doors and we can relax a little now.
“We can now looking at other options down the line. Certain players like to sort their future early in the summer, whilst others are quite happy to see what moves are out there.
“I am absolutely delighted with the work so far.
“Alan is an absolute leader, a warrior, he really is. He’s been at some fantastic clubs and played with some great players and been managed by some brilliant managers. But I judged him right at the end, at the game here when MK Dons played. He had an understanding and nous that we were lacking.
“He’s going to bring plenty off the field, but also the professionalism, the experience and that intensity he’s got.
“I’m vetting players daily, making sure we have the right types of people at the club. I’m meeting them first to make sure they are the right characters. I want a certain type of players here.”
