Throwback Thursday: An Unforgettable Opening Day At The Home Of The Champions

19 June 2014

Another classic image from the NCFC History archives...

As Notts County’s Sky Bet League 1 fixtures were announced this week and the countdown to Preston North End has already started, we thought we’d take a look back at an unforgettable opening day fixture against Aston Villa.

This week’s Throwback Thursday picture shows Notts County legend Iain McCulloch rising to head home Notts’ first top flight goal for 55 years in the 1981.82 curtain raiser at Villa Park.

Villa had been crowned champions the previous season and everyone had expected them to welcome Jimmy Sirrel’s Magpies to the First Division with a thrashing…

McCulloch’s 24th minute header proved to be the winning goal in a surprise 1-0 victory, which was followed by a draw with Manchester City and a 2-1 triumph over Coventry City.

Do you have any memories of the day? Share your stories on the club’s official Facebook and Twitter pages.

The club would like to thank Bowles Associates, JMS Photography, Dan Westwell and the Nottingham Post for supporting the NCFC History archives.

Look out for more classic photographs every Thursday.
