Derry: An Incredibly Brave Defensive Display

24 August 2014

Manager Shaun Derry praised his team after securing back-to-back wins at Vale Park…

The Magpies made it six points in a week after beating Port Vale 2-0 in the Sky Bet League One and Derry was delighted with his side.

Goals in each half from midfielders Gary Jones and Liam Noble was enough to give Notts the win, but it was the defensive display all over the pitch that caught the boss' eye.

He told Magpie Player: "It was a back to the walls display, an incredible defensive display and coming to places like Preston and Port Vale you have to dig in and be brave all over the pitch.

"We have to find a way to win games and we did that today.

"But it wasn't just the defenders, big Jake Cassidy was unbelievable up there and he made it difficult, all over the pitch I'm so proud of them.

"Two big wins this week, after the disappointment we all felt with the Fleetwood game, but we knew it was going to be a tough season. It's not always going to go our way.

"We have responded brilliantly since then. We got off to a great start through Gary Jones, we had a lot of luck, but in the same time the intentions were set right from the off.

"I'm pleased with Liam Noble as he showed bravery to take the free-kick at a crucial time. Goals from midfielder are important this season and they can all score goals, they do give us that type of performance.

"Age is just a number when talking about Gary Jones, he was Bradford's best player for the past two years and we are lucky to have him here. He's a great lad to have around.

"Bristol City is a huge game on Sunday, they all are, I'm pleased we are going into with six points. I'm absolutely delighted with the start we've made so far."

Derry also told the local media that Blair Adams was forced off with the recurrence of his injury, meanwhile Alan Smith was subbed for tactical reasons.
