Notts Aim To Keep The Fat Lady At Bay

4 April 2014

The fat lady had been ready to sing just a couple of weeks ago but Notts County now have their destiny in their own hands heading into the final six fixtures.

Manager Shaun Derry admitted after the Tranmere Rovers game that she was humming, as Notts slumped to seven points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Sky Bet League 1 table and appeared destined for the drop.

Since then, the Magpies have overcome the odds by recording three wins on the spin to climb out of the bottom four and kicked The Great Escape campaign into life.

The manager hopes to see his side keep up the momentum this weekend at Griffin Park, where they face a difficult test in the form of Championship-bound Brentford.

The fat lady still haunts Derry and he is determined to prevent her from warming up the vocal chords again.

“I’m glad that she’s lost her voice for the minute because Tranmere away was a tough day, especially losing in the manner that we did in the last 10 minutes,” he told Magpie Player.

“It hurt the boys but I’ve got to take my hat off to the boys because of how they’ve responded.

“It comes from within and thankfully they’ve managed to redeem themselves and managed to put themselves in a better position.”

He continued: “We have got the momentum and I don’t want the wheels to fall off, that’s for sure.

“What I want us to do is continue playing the way we have.

“A few weeks back, we came in off the back of a 3-0 home win over Coventry and then we played Wolves away.

“I know we didn’t disgrace ourselves we didn’t do ourselves justice, as we didn’t play the way I wanted us play and we didn’t keep those beliefs that we’d got from the 90 minutes before hand.

“I want us to go to Brentford and play our way and we’ll see what happens.”
