Liddle Weighs Up Number Trade

24 May 2013

Gary Liddle is considering asking Neal Bishop if he will consider swapping squad numbers for the new season.

Liddle was handed the number eight jersey after being brought to Meadow Lane primarily as a midfielder.

An injury to centre-back Manny Smith early into the 2012.13 campaign led to the former Hartlepool United man dropping into the heart of defence – a role that he had previously carried out earlier in his career.

Having performed in the position to great effect, highlighted by his Supporters’ Player of the Year, Manager’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards, Liddle is now eager to remain a defender in 2013.14.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed it this season, I must admit, and having been a first team player for seven years now people seem to think that midfield is my primary position.

“I’ve played half of my games at centre-back and half in midfield and this season especially I’ve worked hard at my game at centre-back and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing most of the time alongside Dean Leacock.

“Going into next season, I’d certainly like to nail down that position and become a master of one position and not just a jack of all trades.

“I’m looking at Bish’s number, because four’s my lucky number so I might have to have a word with him.”

Liddle is looking forward to the next campaign, following an enjoyable first year with the club.

“Over the last couple of years at Hartlepool it sort of petered out a little bit and I became stale," he explained.

“I think that showed in my performances and moving to Notts County and a new city, it sort of reinvigorated me a little bit.

“I’ve become a new player and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first season.”
