Proud Hollis Learning Quickly

14 March 2013

Defender Haydn Hollis is loving every minute of his first team run for his hometown club.

Raised in Selston, Nottinghamshire, Hollis linked up with the Magpies as a youth team scholar in 2008, following the reformation of the club's Academy.

Two years later, the 20-year-old earnt a senior deal at Meadow Lane but for this first time has been given a chance to prove he has what it takes as a regular in the starting 11.

Having impressed against Leyton Orient, Crawley Town and Preston North End, the club's official matchbook sat down with the promising centre-back for an in-depth interview that can be read in full in the Scunthorpe edition of #themag.

As part of the interview, he said: “As a local lad, you want to play for your home town and I love it here at the minute, because the lads and the coaches are brilliant.

“Working with Chris every day, I think I’ve improved a lot and when I was with Johnno (Michael Johnson), I felt I improved a lot as a footballer.

"When I was a second-year scholar, that was when I felt I was at my best, because I was playing games every week and getting the most out of myself.

“I’m only 20 years old and the more games you play, you get fitter and learn little things with all the players you play against, especially in this league.

"There’s some clever players and some big, big players that you have to fight and you learn something every time.

“I just want to start as many games as I can - not friendlies but matches for three points.

I still feel like I’m improving but if I play games every week, I’ll get even better.”
