Ex-Boxer In Fight For Longer Deal

28 June 2013

New signing Malcolm Melvin is fighting for a long-term future at Notts County Football Club after agreeing a six-month deal at Meadow Lane.

Melvin, 18, will officially become a Magpies’ player on 1 July when his scholarship with Aston Villa expires.

The tough-tackling central midfielder was previously a boxer, just like his father - also named Malcolm - who once challenged for the British and Commonwealth title.

However, Melvin opted to pursue a life in football and has worked his way through the Villa Park Academy, where he went on to become youth team captain and later featured in the Barclays Premier Academy League.

Melvin caught the eye of first team manager Chris Kiwomya during a series of successful trials last season and is determined become a hit in the black and white stripes.

In an exclusive interview with Magpie Player, he said: “It’s a short time to prove myself but it keeps you hungry.

“I’d like to get five or six first team appearances and earn myself a longer contract.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here because it was a stressful time trying to find a club.

“I came to train with Notts County and they liked me and I’m so happy to have signed the contract.”
