Finland Diary: The Journey

4 July 2013

A round-up of the journey to the team's base in Finland...

Well, we made it. It was a long day but we made it.

Our journey started from Meadow Lane at 7.30am, when our coach departed for Gatwick Airport. This made up the first three hours of our day and, as expected, the bus was quiet as the players either listened to their music or caught up with a bit of sleep.

Check-in was as smooth as could be expected with around 30 players and staff in tow. Following a quick bite to eat in the departures lounge, we were up in the air for the first time that day.

The initial destination was Stockholm, Sweden, where we had a couple of hours' wait for the transfer to Lulea. The majority found a spot in a nice restaurant but used the time to get to know the new boys, including Andy Haworth, Mustapha Dumbuya and a number of trialists, as well as top up their phone batteries.

The next flight was much quicker - just over an hour - and we landed at around 11pm. After gathering the baggage, the light was at the end of the tunnel - and actually outside of the airport.

It doesn't appear to get dark in this area of the world and had the bus clock not displayed the time, you would have mistaken it for mid-afternoon. Still, sleep was on everybody's minds.

We pulled up to the hotel just after midnight (local time), more than 14 hours after departing Nottingham. Food was waiting but the clear choice was to take it straight up to the rooms, as a 9am breakfast call awaited.

Today (Thursday) has seen the players train ahead of the first friendly of the tour against Kemi Kings. This will be covered in tomorrow's diary entry here on the official site, along with the first gallery.
