Keith Curle has been given permission to bring a new striker and hopes to bolster his ranks before the weekend.
Curle has made it clear that he wants to freshen up his frontline and has handed a list of targets to the board of directors.
On Monday afternoon, the manager cast his eye over a potential recruit and will be checking out another player on Wednesday.
Curle has not ruled out a new arrival ahead of Tuesday night’s npower League 1 encounter with Portsmouth at Fratton Park (7.45pm kick-off).
He told Magpie Player: “I’ve had a fantastic phone call from the chairman over the weekend and he basically told me ‘tell me what you want, tell me what you need and I’ll do my best to accommodate you if a financial package can be sorted out whereby we can fit it into the salary cost management’.
“There’s a little bit of movement there and we’ve just got to get the right player in at the right cost.
“I gave the chairman seven potential targets that I think would suit the way we play and are also the quality of player that we’re looking to bring to the football club.
“The difficulty now is going to be the finances but when the chairman asks what you want, you give your top six or seven targets first of all.
“I know they’re quite expensive ones but you get what you pay for.”
