Big Chris Key To County Attack

23 November 2012

Keith Curle is ready to unleash his latest recruit in this weekend’s six-pointer with Swindon Town at Meadow Lane.

The County boss made a last-ditch signing on loan transfer deadline day by signing powerful frontman Chris Iwelumo from Championship Watford.

The Scottish international, whose initial spell at the club will last until 1 January, has spent more than six seasons playing in the top two tiers of English football to great effect, having hit double figures in four of those.

As soon as it became clear that Iwelumo was available, Curle saw him as the ideal man to spearhead the Magpies’ attack.

He said: “Chris has got an opportunity to come in and have a starting role, if all things go well in training, and we want to build off of him.

“He’s just got to go out and play his football with a smile on his face, express himself.

“I like his presence that he has on the field, he knows his role as a centre-forward.

“He’s got good link-up play, can score a goal, will get on the end of crosses, but he’s a man and he’s a good character.

“I think he’s a focal point, which is what our attacking play has been slightly missing, in my opinion.

“A target man doesn’t necessarily mean size, it means being able to retain possession of the football for us to build on.

“That will allow us to get into the final third on a more consistent basis.”
